While this guy violates all laws of nature, he follows almost all of the body alteration procedures on the list. With the addition of full facial tattoos to stripe his skin like some kind of a tiger, piercings that are used for attaching whiskers, and teeth filing so he can more easily eat a diet of raw meat (yeah, that’s right), Dennis Avner is about as close to being Catman as you can get. And better yet he actually holds down an office job!

Teeth Decorations

Teeth decorations vary and span from inlaid jewels to teeth filed to points. Some like to sharpen their teeth to look more like a vampire, while others show their wealth by having them all coated in gold. In Africa, some tribes file teeth into points, and knock out others, to show the participant has made the journey from childhood to adulthood.

Pierced Glasses

I do occasionally wear glasses and while in theory this sounds like a good concept I don’t think I would actually attempt it. If you’re not bothered by facial piercings and you’re sick of misplacing your glasses or replacing your contacts, your spectacles can now be permanently attached to your face via a piercing across the nose.

Pointy Ears

Some people have started having surgery to turn their human shaped ears into those of a mythological Elf. The reshaping is achieved by a careful dissection from the top of the ear which is then replaced by a specially crafted flap that has been made from the cartilage and skin of the patient. Skin closure is done with unabsorable, uninterrupted sutures.

Earlobe Stretching

A craze that has seemed to take off around the world, earlobe stretching involves a piercing in the ear that gradually over time will be replaced by a larger piercing making the hole in the ear stretch. This is known as a “flesh tunnel”. The stopping point is said to be 1/2 an inch as this is the point in which the ear will still be able to heal and seal the hole. It’s believed this body modification was inspired by the African tribal women who stretch their earlobes as part of their culture.

Tongue Splitting

Otherwise known as tongue bifurcation, this body modification sees the tongue split centrally creating a forked tongue as a result. Most methods involve laser surgery or scalpeling but some modifiers who choose to do it themselves achieve the look by tightening nylon bindings that have been inserted into an existing tongue piercing. This method takes a while to achieve and the modifier will have to endure a tremendous amount of pain to get there. Tongue splitting is reversible but the reversal is even more painful than the tongue splitting procedure.

Body Suspension

Body suspension is the act of suspending the human body via temporary piercings made just before the suspension process. The body is then raised either partially or completely from the ground by especially modified fishing hooks. Suspensions are sometimes used for meditation supposedly to gain a higher level of spiritual fulfillment or awareness. It can also be used as entertainment or as performance art.

Corset Piercings

This is one of the newest trends in body modification. Corset piercings are a series of surface piercings arranged up the back in two vertical columns. The piercing is located in the spot where the eyelets would be if one was wearing a corset. It is a symmetrical piercing with an equal number of holes on each side. As few as four holes can be used (two on each side) up to as many as the expanse of skin will allow. Due to the difficulty and risks associated with permanently healing single surface piercings, most corset piercings are intended to be temporary in nature.

Some people will go to great lengths to stand out in the crowd, which has meant some extreme methods of body modifications over the years. Gone are the days of standard tattoos or piercings, they’re so passe. Nowadays there are many new ways to alter the human body in a way that will make it more unique than it already is. Here are some examples of just how far some people will go just to be different.


3D-Art Implant is any object implanted fully under the skin for the purpose of affecting a sculptural change of the surface. The “invention” and popularization of implants as 3D-Art is credited primarily to artist Steve Haworth, who in early 1994, invented the concept of implanting steel under the skin. Implants can be stretched just like piercings. A good example of this are horn implants—they start as smaller implants, and are then taken out when healed and replaced with slightly larger ones. This process is repeated to achieve the final size.


Branding, perhaps, the most painful of all body modifications, is a process that involves burning the skin in a manner that will result in a permanent scar or mark, usually in a pattern or the shape of a specific symbol. In full-scale branding, the iron is heated hot enough and applied long enough that the resulting wound is a third degree burn, which destroys the nerve. Body modifiers who have chosen this form of scarification claim that due to the extreme pain, this type of scarring is therefore more personal to them and to some extent, more symbolic.

Performed with a traditional tattooing needle, the eye is held open while the pigment is injected directly into the cornea.


Scarification is not a new form of body modification. In primitive societies, members would scar their bodies to note great defeats and hunts. Today scarification is the creative and artistic application of scars in a controlled manner to achieve an aesthetically or spiritually pleasing result. With this particular body modification, cuts are made between 1/4″ and 3/4″ into the skin while the scar tissue is used to imprint words, pictures, and designs upon the body.

Στην Αθήνα, δεν έχω βρει ακόμα καλλιτέχνη που να ασχολείται με αυτό! Γνωρίζω τον τρόπο χτυπήματος ενός τέτοιου tattoo, αλλά (άσχετα με τα όσα λέγονται) δεν γνωρίζω ακόμα αν υπάρχουν παρενέργειες! Επίσης, κάτι που ίσως δεν ξέρετε, είναι, ότι στο φως της ημέρας, το σημάδι από ένα τέτοιο tattoo είναι ορατό...


...γι αυτό το λόγο, προτείνω να κάνετε μόνο το outline κ όχι γεμίσματα!

Μια καλή ιδέα -για όσους θέλουν να δοκιμάσουν- είναι να χτυπήσουν με blacklight ink το περίγραμμα ενός tattoo που έχουν ήδη.

Ο Δρ Lajos Nagy υποστηρίζει ότι η τεχνική του, στην αισθητική χειρουργική, δλδ το στυλ Spock των αυτιών μπορεί πραγματικά να βελτιώσει την ακοή.Ένας από τους λόγους, μας λέει, είναι ότι τα κομμένα αυτιά, στρέφουν προς τους ήχους με έναν καλύτερο τρόπο. (Στην περίπτωση των ζώων, συμπληρώνεται από το γεγονός ότι μπορούν να προσανατολιστούν προς την πηγή ήχων χωρίς στροφή των κεφαλιών τους, με την κίνηση μόνο των αυτιών τους.) Ενας δεύτερος λόγος είναι η υπέροχη εμπειρία που αποχτά κάποιος, όταν ακούει μουσική!Γι αυτό πολλοί fun ενός συγκεκριμένου είδους μουσικής, έχουν επιλέξει αυτό το στυλ στ' αυτιά τους!

Τώρα αν ρωτήσετε τι γνώμη μου....Τι να πω; Χίλιες φορές tattoo...

Το Strike-branding είναι, στην ουσία, το ίδιο με το μαρκάρισμα ενός ζώου. Ένα κομμάτι μετάλλου θερμαίνεται και χτυπιέται με συμπίεση στο δέρμα για να προκαλέσει εγκαύματα. Το μαρκάρισμα χρησιμοποιήθηκε ιστορικά στους ανθρώπους κατά τη διάρκεια του εμπορίου σκλάβων, αλλά και στους εγκληματίες.(συνήθως με ένα ορατό σήμα που απεικονίζει το έγκλημα.) Τώρα πια είναι μόδα!
Αλλο είδος μαρκαρίσματος είναι αυτό που γίνεται με λέιζερ -electrocautery-.(μαρκάρισμα που περιλαμβάνει μια συσκευή συγγενή σε έναν οξυγονοκολλητή τόξων.)Αυτή η μέθοδος δημιουργεί έναν σπινθήρα της ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας που καίει το δέρμα, και λόγω της δυνατότητας να ελεγχθεί το βάθος της περικοπής και η δριμύτητα της ζημίας δερμάτων είναι μια ακριβέστερη μέθοδος, που επιτρέπει τα πιό σύνθετα σχέδια.
Σπανιότερος τρόπος μαρκαρίσματος είναι αυτός που δημιουργεί έγκαυμα από ακραίο κρύο -και συνήθως χρησιμοποιείται υγρό άζωτο-.Η συσκευασία (packing) χρησιμοποιείται, σπάνια στο δυτικό κόσμο, ως ακόμα μια μέθοδος scarification.Στη συσκευασία, οι τομές γίνονται στο δέρμα και τα υλικά όπως η τέφρα ή ο άργιλος παρεμβάλλονται κάτω από το δέρμα για να δημιουργήσουν τις σκόπιμες «προσκρούσεις».Τα σχέδια διαμορφώνονται κατά τη διάρκεια της επούλωσης του δέρματος, το οποίο προσπαθεί να αποβάλει το ξένο υλικό!ΠΡΟΣΟΧΗ
Επειδή όλες αυτές οι τεχνικές είναι νέες στην Ελλάδα και οι καλλιτέχνες που ασχολούνται με αυτές είναι ελάχιστοι, καλό θα ήταν να μην πάτε στον πρώτο που θα συναντήσετε!Η δερματοστιξία είναι πολύ πιό κοινή από το scarification, έτσι η εύρεση ενός πεπειραμένου καλλιτέχνη είναι δύσκολη. Οι κίνδυνοι από ένα μαρκάρισμα είναι πολλοί περισσότεροι απ ότι σε ένα tattoo. Γι αυτό καλύτερα ξανασκεφτείτε το...

Τις περισσότερες φορές, οι καλλιτέχνες φορούν μάσκες προκειμένου να αποτραπεί αυτό, δεδομένου ότι οι διάφορες ασθένειες μπορούν να περάσουν στον αέρα μέσω των καπνών από το δέρμα που καίγεται. Το Scarification είναι μια αρκετά πιο επίπονη διαδικασία από τη συνηθισμένη δερματοστιξία, και γι αυτόν τον λόγο πολλοί λίγοι είναι αυτοί που επέλεξαν να το κάνουν. Το scarification είναι σχετικά σπάνιο και επομένως μοναδικό -για την ώρα-. Προσωπικά δεν ξέρω αν αξίζει τον κόπο! Προτιμώ το tattoo.

Tο ότι η πραγματικότητα ξεπερνά και την πιο δυνατή φαντασία, είναι γνωστό. Όταν όμως τα στοιχεία που τεκμηριώνουν αυτόν τον κανόνα παρουσιάζονται καταγραμμένα και εικονογραφημένα, τότε το αποτέλεσμα είναι εκπληκτικό.

Και πράγματι η έκπληξη - που πολλές φορές μετατρέπεται σε σοκ - κυριαρχεί σ' όλες τις σελίδες αυτού του βιβλίου. Πρόσωπα και καταστάσεις που κινούνται στο χώρο του ακραίου, παρουσιάζονται ανάγλυφα και σκιαγραφούν γλαφυρά την εικόνα του πιο παράξενου πλάσματος σ' όλο το σύμπαν: του ανθρώπου!

Γλυπτική σώματος ή αλλιώς Body Carving
Εάν δεν ξέρετε τι είναι η γλυπτική σώματος, σκεφτείτε την γλυπτική σε ξύλο. Ένας καλλιτέχνης παίρνει ένα κομμάτι ξύλου, συνήθως βελανιδιά, και με ένα σύνολο μικρών μαχαιριών κόβει τα μικρά κομμάτια από το υλικό. Στη γλυπτική σώματος, αντί της εργασίας στο ξύλο, οι καλλιτέχνες εργάζονται στο ανθρώπινο δέρμα. Εκείνοι που αποφασίζουν να μετατρέψουν τους οργανισμούς τους σε υλικό χάραξης, επιμένουν ότι το δέρμα τους είναι ένα κομμάτι τέχνης.
Η διαδικασία αυτή διαρκεί πολλές ώρες. Κατ' αρχάς, το δέρμα, συνήθως στην πλάτη, πρέπει να απολυμαθεί, ακριβώς όπως όλα τα εργαλεία που θα χρησιμοποιηθούν. Στην καλύτερη περίπτωση, η γλυπτική σωμάτων πρέπει να εκτελεσθεί σε ένα καθαρό, αποστειρωμένο δωμάτιο με ένα καλό σύστημα εξαερισμού. Συχνά συμβαίνει, σε ένα ημι-επαγγελματικό γκαράζ. Αυτό μπορεί να οδηγήσει σε μια σοβαρή μόλυνση στην καλύτερη περίπτωση και στον επίπονο θάνατο στη χειρότερη περίπτωση. Τα κομμάτια του δέρματος αφαιρούνται από το σώμα, κάνοντας πληγές και που στους επόμενους μήνες, θα μεταμορφωθούν σ ένα ροζ σχέδιο. Τα απορρίμματα είτε καίγονται είτε λαμβάνονται από τον ιδιοκτήτη τους.Ένας άλλος τρόπος της γλυπτικής σωμάτων είναι το λέιζερ που κόβει το σχέδιο με χειρουργική ακρίβεια.Δεδομένου ότι είναι μια πολύ ακριβή μέθοδος, αντί ενός λέιζερ, πολλοί καλλιτέχνες χρησιμοποιούν απλά ένα πρωτόγονο εργαλείο.
Η γλυπτική σώματος έχει μια μακροχρόνια παράδοση στην Αφρική και την Ασία. Το Scarification - ο όρος που χρησιμοποιείται από τους επιστήμονες - είναι ευρέως δημοφιλές μεταξύ των ιθαγενών της Δυτικής Αφρικής, της Νέας Γουϊνέας, και της Νέας Ζηλανδίας, αλλά μπορεί επίσης να επισημανθεί στις αρχαίες φυλές που κατοικούσαν στη βόρεια Ασία και ακόμη και τη Μέση Ανατολή.
